BORDENTOWN TOWNSHIP, NJ—This week is Child Passenger Safety Week, and the Bordentown Township Police Department is helping to make sure that parents are traveling with their children as safely as possible.
The Department, which has officers that are trained in the installation and inspection of child safety seats, is offering its services to make sure that parents have properly installed car seats and that their children are properly fitted in the seats when they are being used.
The goal of Child Passenger Safety Week is to make sure children are in the correct seat, that it is properly installed and used and that it is registered with its manufacturer to ensure that parents receive important safety updates.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHSTA), car seats, when installed correctly, can reduce the risk of fatal injury in a crash by 71 percent for infants and 54 percent for toddlers.
Unfortunately, many parents install their car seats improperly. The NHSTA says that nearly half of all car seats are installed incorrectly. Among children under 5 years of age, an estimated 325 lives were saved in 2017 alone because they were properly buckled. However, an additional 46 children could have been saved if every child was properly buckled.
To schedule a car seat installation with the BTPD, contact Patrolman Edwards at (609) 298-0025, Extension 1222, or via e-mail at [email protected].
