GELANG PATAH: A 22-year-old mechanic died after being crushed by a roller compactor while repairing the heavy vehicle in Tanjung Kupang here.
Johor Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) deputy director Supian Alias said the victim was performing his tasks on a slope near the Jalan Anggun road construction site when the heavy vehicle rolled down and crushed him.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene by a medical officer from the Gelang Patah health clinic after the 12pm incident on Wednesday (Sept 2), he said in a statement on Sunday (Sept 6).
“Following the incident, DOSH issued an order to immediately stop all works involving roller compactors at the project site, ” he said, adding that the contractor could face legal actions under the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 for non-compliance.
Supian added that the incident was being investigated by a team of investigation officers from the department before necessary actions could be taken.
All accidents, whether those involving employees or the public, are being taken seriously by his department, he said.
“Employers shoulder the responsibility of ensuring that the workplace is safe by identifying possible hazards, making risk assessments and putting in place safety measures before allowing their employees to carry out their tasks.
“This could help to lessen occupational hazards and prevent accidents, ” he said.
