Fraunhofer IIS has announced the opening of a new 5G test centre with two test beds for Industry 4.0 and automotive applications at its sites in Erlangen and Nuremberg. The 5G test bed in Nuremberg supports tests focusing on applications for industry and logistics under real conditions using the latest mobile technology in an standalone 5G campus network. Networked, flexible and production processes can be tested early in the campus network.
The 5G Bavaria test bed Automotive, which is currently under construction, is infrastructure to test 5G functionalities in a real traffic environment. The project is supported by the 5G Bavaria initiative with a grant of EUR 18 million for the centre and EUR 7.9 million for the test beds. The test centre offers companies the opportunity to close the gap between the standardisation of 5G and the practical industrial use. Companies can try out applications under real conditions. The development of 5G-based services will be a crucial component in the implementation of new IoT applications. Fraunhofer IIS will provide its expertise for research, technology development and evaluation as well as for technical advice.
The test centre is already providing laboratory-based simulation and emulation methods, and tests in a real mobile site environment. The 5G Bavaria test centre offers simulation methods for companies, from reliable sensor networking to simulation platforms, localisation technologies and machine learning.
